Celebrating First Contact Day in Star Trek Fleet Command

By Bek 5 April 2025

Star Trek fans across the galaxy have reason to celebrate this April 5th: it’s First Contact Day! Commemorating humanity’s historic first interaction with extraterrestrial life, First Contact Day symbolizes exploration, unity, and hope—core themes of the Star Trek universe and Star Trek Fleet Command alike.

But why April 5th?

According to StarTrek.com, the selection of April 5th has a charmingly personal backstory. Ronald D. Moore, co-writer of the film Star Trek: First Contact, revealed, “It’s my oldest son Jonathan’s birthday, and that’s the only reason the date was chosen.”

The Importance of First Contact Day

As explained by StarTrek.com, First Contact Day celebrates the launch of the Phoenix, humanity’s first warp-capable spacecraft, piloted by inventor Zefram Cochrane. On April 5, 2063, after successfully achieving warp speed, Cochrane’s flight drew the attention of a passing Vulcan survey ship—the T’Plana-Hath—leading to the legendary landing in Bozeman, Montana. Here, Vulcans and humans first met, marking a turning point toward peace, collaboration, and ultimately, the formation of the United Federation of Planets.
