The History of the Mirror Universe

By rebekah 6 June 2024

A Backstory on the Mirror Universe as we know it in the Star Trek series.

“Captain’s log stardate… unknown. During an ion storm the landing party has beamed back to the Enterprise and found it and the personnel aboard changed. The ship is subtly altered physically. Behavior and discipline has become brutal, savage.”

-Kirk

The dangerous and brutal Mirror Universe has been part of Star Trek since the original series. First introduced in the episode “Mirror, Mirror”, viewers were introduced to the vicious Terran Empire, a twisted inversion of the Federation in which humans dominated the other species in a drive for galactic conquest. Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, and Uhura escaped from the Mirror Universe and were able to return to their own, but this was only the beginning of the stories that would be told.

Although there were no mentions of the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine brought us back there in the second season episode Crossover, where we learned that the Terran Empire eventually fell to the Klingon/Cardassian Alliance, whose brutal rule in no way improved things. The Enterprise two-parter “In a Mirror, Darkly” would later show us the origins of the Terran Empire and how they gained the power to overwhelm their neighbors through the use of stolen technology from the future.

Mirror Universe episodes were always entertaining, allowing for the shows’ actors to play delightfully twisted versions of their beloved characters, posing intriguing “what if?” questions about how different things could be, and giving us the iconic “Evil Spock Goatee” which became the standard imagery for how to identify “the evil twin” for decades after! We are excited to bring the Mirror Universe to Star Trek Fleet Command, and look forward to seeing what sort of stories will be told by our Commanders!
